Bouvet

(Piotr Nykiel's collection)

Bouvet sinking on March 18, 1915. Her position compared with the shoreline shows how fast it happened. The loss of this ship was not a result of hitting the mine – as almost all historians still believe – but of the Turkish artillery fire.

The battery commander Capt. Hilmi and 2nd Lt. Fahri posing in front of a 240/35 gun from Fort Rumeli Mecidiye (Fort No. 13). Right after the battle of March 18, 1915 it was believed in Turkey that exactly this gun has sunk Bouvet.

(Harp Mecmuası)

An Ottoman propaganda postcard printed shortly after March 18, 1915 battle and saying that Bouvet was sunk by the Turkish costal battery.

(L'Illustration)

A handful of Bouvet’s “elders” who survived the ship’s disaster. Sitting in the first row are: Lt. Théverand and Lt. Quernel. Standing in the second row are: Midshipman Villier de la Noue, Midshipman Simon and Lt. Bécam.
