Thanks to this caricature of the First Lord of Admiralty Sir Winston Churchill published in German press people from SE Poland (then under Austria-Hungarian occupation) still use the insult: “You Dardanelles donkey!”.

Lt. Norman Holbrook VC – commander of B11 submarine which on December 13, 1914 sunk the Ottoman battleship Mesudiye. He was the first submariner to get the VC and the first awarded with this highest British order for the achievements in the Dardanelles.
